Welcome to The Royal British Legion's External Grants Portal
The Royal British Legion's External Grants programme is open to applications from not-for-profit organisations running, or planning, charitable activities in support of the Armed Forces community.
Applications are open for funding towards projects or services delivering welfare support directly to the Armed Forces community. Applications for projects or services supporting the following areas of need will be prioritised:
- Employment and training
- Family support
- Homelessness and outreach
- Supporting the elderly
An expression of interest (Stage One application) must be completed in the first instance, with successful applicants being invited to complete a full application (Stage Two). Please note that the Legion is not inviting applications for multi-year funding at this time and most grants run for up to 12 months. Continuation funding may be applied for towards the end of a live grant award. We will accept applications for up to £50,000, with smaller applications being encouraged. Please contact us should you wish to apply for more than £50,000.
Please see below key dates for Service Delivery application rounds during 2018/19. To apply, please register and select the 'External Grants - Stage One' application form below.
Please note that Stage One applications for Q2 are currently unavailable but will be opened shortly.
Notes for applicants
We receive considerably more applications than we are able to fund. As above, applications supporting the External Grants priority areas of need will be prioritised but this is not a guarantee that such applications will be successful. We understand that time and resources are required to submit funding applications and appreciate the efforts of each organisation that applies to the External Grants programme. Feedback is provided to all unsuccessful applicants.
We will only consider applications towards projects or services that support individuals eligible for Legion support. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on our eligibility criteria.
We have previously accepted applications towards Capacity Building and Research projects. Due to demand for funding under the Service Delivery funding stream, we are not currently accepting applications towards other funding streams.
The Legion provides support services to the Armed Forces community across the United Kingdom. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on types of support provided directly by the Legion.
The Legion has 16 Area Offices across the United Kingdom. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on Legion services near you.
We are unlikely to award funding towards projects or services which duplicate, or risk duplicating, support provided by the Legion. Please contact us at the below email address should you wish to discuss a project/service with an Area Office.
Unsuccessful Stage One applicants must wait 6 months before reapplying; unsuccessful Stage Two applicants must wait 12 months before reapplying.
Please note that funding enquiries for projects exclusively for the benefit of those residing in Scotland should be submitted directly to Poppyscotland.
