Welcome to The Royal British Legion's External Grants Portal

The Royal British Legion's External Grants programme is open to applications from not-for-profit organisations running, or planning, charitable activities in support of the Armed Forces community.

The External Grants programme has multiple funding streams open to applicants. Please find further information on each funding stream below.

Organisations can apply to more than one funding stream as long as they meet the eligibility criteria for each funding stream. Please note that each funding stream has its own respective application form.

Service Delivery

Funding towards projects/services delivering welfare support directly to the Armed Forces community. Applications for projects/services supporting the following outcome themes will be prioritised:

  • Employment and training
  • Family support
  • Homelessness and outreach
  • Supporting the elderly

Stage One applications must be completed in the first instance, with successful applicants being invited to complete a Stage Two application. Please note that the Legion is not inviting applications for multi-year funding at this time. Applications will only be considered for 'one off' payments. Continuation funding may be applied for in following years. The typical grant award is not likely to exceed £50,000 – smaller applications are encouraged.

Please see below key dates for Service Delivery application rounds during 2017/18. Further submission deadlines for future grants rounds will be updated in 2018. To apply, please register and select the 'External Grants - Stage One' application form below.

Please note that funding enquiries for projects exclusively for the benefit of those residing in Scotland should be submitted directly to Poppyscotland.

The Q4 Stage One application form will open by Friday 23rd February 2018.

Capacity Building

Funding towards capacity-building activities for organisations supporting the Armed Forces community. We will consider funding towards any costs which the applying organisation is able to demonstrate will enhance its capability and/or capability to support Legion beneficiaries. We expect to receive applications towards activities such as:

  • Training for staff and/or volunteers
  • Enhancing governance policies, processes and procedures
  • Premises and equipment
  • Marketing
  • Developing links/learning from other organisations working with similar aims and beneficiaries
  • Support and/or external evaluation of services.

The above is not an exhaustive list. Please contact the External Grants Team should you wish to discuss whether your project is suitable.

We expect the typical grant value to be £100-£10,000. Please contact the External Grants Team in the first instance should you wish to apply for more than £10,000.

We will accept one application from each not-for-profit, non-statutory organisation supporting the Armed Forces community. This includes existing/previous External Grant recipients, previously unsuccessful applicants, and organisations which have not previously applied. Applying organisations do not have to have been operating for a minimum time period.

Capacity Building applications are currently closed. Dates for future application rounds will be updated in early 2018.
