Welcome to The Royal British Legion's External Grants Portal

The Royal British Legion's External Grants programme accepts applications from not-for-profit organisations running, or planning, charitable activities in support of the Armed Forces community.

Update 08 April 2020

During this current climate of change and uncertainty related to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not accepting external grant applications from organisations. This difficult decision has been taken in response to the unprecedented challenges our country, organisations and communities are facing at this time. Our focus is and must continue to be on meeting the need of individuals and families at their time of need through our local caseworking, care services, advice services and individual grants capability. We will of course review the situation and hope that, once life in the UK returns to its pre-March 2020 state – or an approximation thereof – we will reopen our External Grants programme.

In the meantime you may wish to explore other funding opportunities, such as the National Emergencies Trust’s Coronavirus Appeal. For more information, and to apply for support for your organisation, please contact your local community foundation. You may also wish to monitor the National Council for Voluntary Organisations’ expert pandemic guidance for charities in the UK.

The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust is launching an emergency grant programme to support highly vulnerable veterans in April. More information is available on the Trust’s website

Notes for applicants

We receive considerably more applications than we are able to fund. For the last round of applications considered under the External Grants programme, we were only able to fund 10% of the value of applications we received. The sheer demand for our funding means that it is vitally important for us to ensure that for every project we fund the Legion is able to clearly understand and measure what impact the funds are having.

Whilst applications supporting the External Grants programme themes and areas of identified need will be prioritised, this s is not a guarantee that such applications will be successful. We understand that time and resources are required to submit funding applications and appreciate the efforts of each organisation that applies to the External Grants programme.

We will only consider applications towards projects or services that support individuals eligible for Legion support. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on TRBL’s eligibility criteria.

The Legion provides support services to the Armed Forces community across the United Kingdom. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on types of support provided directly by the Legion. The Legion has 16 Area Offices across the United Kingdom. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on Legion services near you.

We are unlikely to award funding towards projects or services which duplicate, or risk duplicating, support provided by the Legion.

Unsuccessful Stage One applicants must wait 6 months before reapplying; unsuccessful Stage Two applicants must wait 12 months before reapplying.

Please note that funding enquiries for projects exclusively for the benefit of those residing in Scotland should be submitted directly to Poppyscotland

Please email any enquiries to externalgrants@britishlegion.org.uk
