Welcome to The Royal British Legion's External Grants Portal
The Royal British Legion's External Grants programme accepts applications from not-for-profit organisations running, or planning, charitable activities in support of the Armed Forces community.
The External Grant programme is currently closed to new applications.
Due to the significant growth in demand for grants from our limited budget, The Royal British Legion is currently reviewing the funding priorities of the External Grants Programme. This review includes attempts to map the scale of the Armed Forces Community, what their needs are and what support is required, both in the UK and across the globe. We are also factoring in knowledge from our regionally based teams and specialist service delivery leads about the key needs and gaps are in their specific locations.
It is expected that applications will reopen in the coming months and should you be eligible and wish to apply for any future funding, we encourage you to check the application portal for further updates regarding this.
We do advocate that organisations develop a sustainable funding base so that they are not overly reliant on one funder and given the likely changes to the External Grants Programme funding priorities, we do also take this opportunity to encourage you to explore alternate sources of funding.
Notes for applicants
We receive considerably more applications than we are able to fund. For the last round of applications considered under the External Grants programme, we were only able to fund 10% of the value of applications we received. The sheer demand for our funding means that it is vitally important for us to ensure that for every project we fund the Legion is able to clearly understand and measure what impact the funds are having.
Whilst applications supporting the External Grants programme themes and areas of identified need will be prioritised, this s is not a guarantee that such applications will be successful. We understand that time and resources are required to submit funding applications and appreciate the efforts of each organisation that applies to the External Grants programme.
We will only consider applications towards projects or services that support individuals eligible for Legion support. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on TRBL’s eligibility criteria.
The Legion provides support services to the Armed Forces community across the United Kingdom. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on types of support provided directly by the Legion. The Legion has 16 Area Offices across the United Kingdom. Please refer to the Legion website for further information on Legion services near you.
We are unlikely to award funding towards projects or services which duplicate, or risk duplicating, support provided by the Legion.
Unsuccessful Stage One applicants must wait 6 months before reapplying; unsuccessful Stage Two applicants must wait 12 months before reapplying.
Please note that funding enquiries for projects exclusively for the benefit of those residing in Scotland should be submitted directly to Poppyscotland
